A Czech student collects prizes for researching the effects of lavender against cancer or heart arrhythmia

  • Czech student Tomáš Heger, Palacky University in Olomouc won several international awards (i.e. in Belgium at the EUCYS competition) for research on the effects of lavender extract against cancer and heart arrhythmia.
  • He was engaged in research on essential oils and extracts from medicinal lavender, when he compared three types of lavender.
  • The student's research has shown that the extract is able to prevent the proliferation of tumor cellsand kill them.
  • He also investigated the effects of the extracts on an enzyme that affects the functioning of the heart.
  • The findings could potentially be used in the future in the production of drugs for heart disease.
  • It has proven that lavender has significant anti-inflammatory effects.

Acne treatment with tea tree oil, aloe vera, lavender and calendula

  • Ten men and 29 women participated in the survey.
  • On average, more than 93% of the participants confirmed the positive effects of remedies with lavender, tea tree, aloe vera and calendula oils.
  • Almost 53% of respondents believe that lavender also has therapeutic properties, promoting relaxation and reducing stress. 
  • The positive effects of essential oil are used in skin care, especially in the treatment of acne. 
  • Because of its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, it reduces redness and prevents the development of acne-causing bacteria.
  • It helps regulate sebum production, which contributes to a balanced complexion.
  • It is effective in treating other skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema.
  • The linalool contained is considered to be the main antibacterial component of the oil.

Effect of lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) essential oil on acute inflammatory response

  • The essential oil obtained from the leaves and stem of Lavandula angustifolia is rich in monoterpenes, phenols, 1,8-cineole, borneol and camphor.
  • These components play a role in biological activities and their pharmacological properties.
  • Systemic administration of camphor (one of the main ingredients) has also been shown to reduce edema formation.
  • The results of the study indicate that the oil has anti-edematogenic and anti-inflammatory activity, both topically and orally.
  • The local use of medicinal lavender is therefore increasingly common in cosmetics because, unlike synthetic agents, it does not cause dermatitis.

Effect of lavender oil massage on pain and anxiety in women undergoing brachytherapy

  • Brachytherapy is mainly used for the treatment of malignant diseases.
  • The effect of hand massage performed with baby lavender oil on reducing pain and situational anxiety in women undergoing brachytherapy.
  • Thirty-six patients participated in the study, using a visual analogue scale and a situational anxiety scale. 
  • Prior to brachytherapy, three sessions of hand massage were performed using baby oil with lavender.
  • At the end of brachytherapy, it was found that pain and anxiety levels were significantly lower.
  • Hand massage with lavender oil effectively reduced pain and anxiety. 
  • The method is significantly non-invasive, safe, and affordable in practice.

Differences between men and women in the effects of aromatherapy on anxiety and salivary oxytocin levels

  • Aromatherapy, as a holistic healing method, promotes health and induces well-being through the use of natural plant extracts. 
  • A Japanese study was conducted with 15 men and 10 women who spent 30 minutes in a session with lavender essential oil followed by a lavender hand massage.
  • Oxytocin secretion promoted by lavender aromatherapy has been shown to improve mood in both sexes.
  • Especially in women, aromatherapy with lavender oil suppressed anxiety and increased oxytocin levels.
  • The effect of aromatherapy can vary depending on gender.

Lavender: its phytochemical properties and medicinal and cosmetic uses

  • In traditional medicine, lavender has been used for centuries for its sedative and antidepressant effects.
  • From a phytochemical point of view, lavender contains alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, beta-ocimene, camphor, limonene, sabinene, and terpinene as the main monoterpenes, which are known to be biologically important chemicals. 
  • Lavender has shown beneficial effects in treating vertigo, hair loss, increasing bile flow, treating varicose ulcers, and relieving carpal tunnel syndrome.
  • Studies suggest that essential oils act on serotoninergic neurotransmission and ionotrophic y-aminobutyric acid type A receptors.
  • The strong and pleasant aroma of lavender is considered one of the highly beneficial essential oils and is therefore popularly used in aromatherapy. 
  • In the aromatic herb industry, lavender has gained popularity due to its fragrance and taste.
